Randeep Hooda is exceptionally good and Saqib Saleem plays his part confidently.Īlas beyond the relevant use of retro songs from Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh to Lag Jaa Gale that do impart a surreal aura to the chapter, Karan Johar’s story is the only episode from the entire film that doesn’t directly underline the influence of cinema. Rani Mukherji, in her backless blouse and plunging necklines, exudes enough sex-appeal while playing the sex-deprived wife with elan. Nevertheless Karan Johar succeeds in building subtle chemistry between the characters. Agreed that uncommon sexual orientations are still not openly spoken about or acknowledged in the country at large but it being a common concern makes the story conventional and trivial to an extent. And while the traditional thought under such a scenario would be that something would brew between the discontented wife and her flirtatious colleague, it turns out that Avinash is a gay.Īt the core, the story is about a homosexual in the closet (and no, this is not a spoiler yet) that the director handles earnestly but somewhere in contemporary times, the premise seems dated by a decade. Things change when a young intern, Avinash (Saqib Saleem) joins the wife’s office. Karan Johar’s story comes first and talks about a modern-day couple’s (Rani Mukherji – Randeep Hooda) dysfunctional marriage. Moreover each story in Bombay Talkies is helmed by a different director, thereby giving diverse perspective and wider range to the film in totality. But in times when audience attention span is turning considerably shorter, a good short film can offer instant gratification. Also short films have a different grammar with smaller back-stories, quicker buildups and possibly abrupt or even abstract ends. With only a handful of films made in such structure (I Am, Dus Kahaniyaan, Darna Mana Hai), the format is relatively new to Bollywood. But beyond celebration of cinema, Bombay Talkies works more as a compilation of four short films. Three of them, in a way, highlight the influence of films on an average Indian. On the pretext of the commemoration of completion of 100 years of Indian cinema, Bombay Talkies presents four short stories. Director: Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Bannerji, Karan Johar Cast: Rani Mukherji, Randeep Hooda, Saqib Saleem, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Naman Jain, Vineet Kumar Singh Rating: ***
